1. Meet Rachael

Rachael is a Manager at one of our Branches in NSW and she loves volunteering because it makes her feel like she is giving something back to the community.

Rachael volunteers for the Red Cross as a Tele-Cross volunteer and describes one of her favourite experiences: “One of the elderly clients eagerly awaits my daily call and our conversations often go for 10 minutes or more. She shared her life with me and was keen to get to know me. I’m not sure who actually got more out of the call, her or me, as I often found that when something happy or unusual had happened I couldn’t wait to tell her. “

Rachael says this experience has given her the opportunity to touch base with those that are lonely and often have no one else in their lives to make sure that they’re ok. Read more…

  2. Little Athletics Personal Best Day

Congratulations to all the little athletes who participated in the Community CPS Personal Best Day.

Community CPS is a proud supporter of Little Athletics, we will assist with special events, provide funding for coaching and officiating courses for parents and we’ll provide them with community fund-raising for Little Athletics.

You can support Little Athletics by opening a Community Reward Account.  Then each year the average annual balance held in Community Reward Accounts linked to Little Athletics is calculated and Community CPS donates 1.5 per cent of that balance on behalf of its members. 5. Next Top Credit Union Executive Competition – What an experience!

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the wonderful experience I have had being part of the Next Top Credit Union Executive competition.

Firstly thank you to everyone who voted for me along the way, followed my posts and gave me encouragement and inspiration.

I feel very blessed to have been part of the process and been able to share what we do in the social space at Community CPS.

Presenting to the conference in Florida was amazing. It was great to meet my fellow colleagues in the final 5 Jill Huls, Ashley Kohlrus, Nate Muniz and Peter Walker. I learnt a lot from their projects and presentations. They are a very clever and talented bunch! You can view their presentations online.

Some highlights for me include meeting an industry leader – Tim McAlpine from Currency Marketing and one of the best sessions was presented by Filene on strategic foresight.

And of course a big congratulations to this year’s winner Ashley Kohlrus.

Thanks again everyone, I was very proud to be able to represent Australia and Community CPS on an international stage.

  6. Final Stage of the Next Top Credit Union Executive Competition – please vote!

As mentioned in previous posts, I have made it to the final 5 of the North American – Next Top Credit Union Executive competition.

I am the first person outside of North America to be nominated in this competition, and with your help I could possibly be the first Australian and International winner of this award.

I will be presenting on our credit unions ‘We’re Listening’ social media approach to a conference audience in Florida. After which there is 48 hours of public voting, I need as many votes as possible as these are used to identify the final winner.

Please join the Facebook ‘voting event’ to remind you when to vote, as it is a very short window to vote in and please share this with your friends- every vote counts!

Don’t forget to vote by joining the Facebook event!

Or vote from 6-7th November http://nexttopcreditunionexec.com/

  7. I’ve made it to the top 5!

As some of you may know from my previous posts, I was nominated in this year’s Search for the Next Top Credit Union Executive which is run by the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES).

I was nominated for my role in creating, maintaining and growing our credit union’s social media presence “We’re Listening” and I’m the first non-North American to be identified in the Search for the Next Top Credit Union Executive.

I was  nominated in June when the competition started along with 112 other nominees. Our application process involved a video demonstrating why we were nominated. The next stage involved a public vote and from there I made it to the Top 15 in August.

After a rigorous judging process today I was advised I made it to the next and final stage the final 5!  I am extremely honoured to represent my credit union Community CPS and Australia on the world stage along with three Americans and one Canadian. :)

The next steps in the competition I’ll be required to produce a one- to two-minute YouTube video detailing the progress of my project. My video along with the other 4 finalist’s videos will be posted on the CUES Next Top Credit Union Exec blog, and the final 5 will all come together to present the results and progress of each of our projects to the judging panel, a conference audience and live to an online audience. The winner will be judged based on a combination of judging panel scores, live audience scores, online votes and social media engagement in November.

As always, I’ll keep you all informed of my progress and when the judging will take place. Wish me luck!

  13. Raising money to help the Cerebral Palsy Alliance

In February, the Community CPS branch in Civic organised a coach trip to IKEA to raise funds for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

Cerebral Palsy is a physical disability that affects the way that a person moves. An Australian child is born with Cerebral Palsy every 15 hours. It’s a lifelong condition, but the effects can vary from a mild weakness in one hand, to a more severe condition, where the person has almost no voluntary movement.

Although there is no known cure, the Cerebral Palsy Alliance strives to enhance the lives of children, teenagers and adults living with cerebral palsy, as well as their families and carers. They aim to foster community participation and skill development through services such as therapy, technology and equipment, respite, fitness and recreation and employment services.

The funds raised from the IKEA trip and other in-branch activities have made it possible for our Civic branch to donate a total of $1412 to this wonderful organisation.

This money is being used to purchase toys and some large activate buttons to add to their Loan Library. These activate buttons allow the children with limited movement to use the toys or communication devices. Having these in the loan library allows the families to try different switch styles to suit different needs.

Civic branch staff would like to thank everyone who helped us make this possible.

If you have any suggestions for other fundraising projects you would like to see us run, please leave us a comment below or send us an email. If you are interested in becoming involved with our community efforts, please click here to see our current volunteering opportunities.

  15. Supporting Bosom Buddies

The Community CPS Foundation recently provided Bosom Buddies in ACT with a $9,500 grant for the production of 15,000 shower tags which contain important information for women on how to self-examine.

Bosom Buddies ACT was established in 1995 as a non-profit organisation of volunteers who provide personal support to breast cancer patients and their families and supporters in the ACT and surrounding regions. All their volunteers have experienced breast cancer personally or through loved ones – and are committed to providing support to every person who is going through the breast cancer journey in their community.

Canberra has the highest rate of breast cancer reported in Australia. Our best defence against these rising statistics is to detect breast cancer early.

As part of a program of early detection, the Community CPS Foundation was pleased to provide a grant to Bosom Buddies for the production of the shower tags.

The shower tags inform women how to be aware of their breasts, how to detect any changes early, and provide a reminder in the shower to regularly check. The tags will be distributed to 15,000 individual women of all ages and to men.
