The MATES program matches eligible participants with a trained volunteer for an initial period of 12 months. Participants and volunteers get together for a few hours weekly or fortnightly to socialise, have fun and experience new activities. This friendly social time helps the participant to reconnect with their community through positive relationships. Activities may include participating in community interest groups, trips to the footy, galleries or cafes or friendly in-home visits.
Participants come from a variety of backgrounds and may include people with a disability or a mental illness, the frail elderly, former prisoners, people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
MATES also hold regular get-togethers for participants and volunteers. These gatherings provide an informal opportunity for people to chat, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and share their experiences of the program.
Volunteers will be patient, open-minded and accepting of people’s differences. Suitable for people 18+
